De “Four Baritones” is een ensemble van 4 topbaritonsaxofonisten (!) uit verschillende hoeken van de muziekwereld. Het kwartet speelt een breed repertoire van oude koormuziek tot “Play That Funky Music”, van Bach tot Jazz.
Dit onderstreept het unieke karakter van het instrument. Lyrisch, melodieus, ritmisch begeleidend en brutaal op de voorgrond tredend, de baritonsaxofoon heeft het allemaal in zich. Geen verrassing dat Adolphe Sax dit instrument als eerste heeft uitgevonden in de saxofoon familie!
Met passie, kennis, grote zorg en onbeperkt plezier dagen deze musici zichzelf en het publiek uit met gloednieuwe composities, arrangementen en projecten verspreid over eeuwen muziekgeschiedenis. Zo waren er samenwerkingen met Nora Fischer, Jeroen Zijlstra, Cor Bakker, DIG d’DIZ.
In 2017 hebben ze een uitgebreide concerttournee gedaan langs de nederlandse podia met een andere bariton; Ernst Daniel Smid. Met een uniek, kleurrijk en breed repertoire met werken van J.S. Bach, Henry Purcell, Pavel Chesnokov maar ook Harry Bannink, Ramses Shaffy en Jules de Corte.
Het ensemble vergaart en ontwikkelt continu nieuw werk, voor een belangrijk deel geschreven door de musici. Tijdens de concerten wordt u meegenomen in de geschiedenis en totstandkoming van dit unieke repertoire

What are the Four Baritones?
The Four Baritones is an ensemble of four leading baritone saxophonists from diverse musical backgrounds. The quartet performs a wide-ranging repertoire, spanning from early choral music to Play That Funky Music, and from Bach to jazz.
This versatility highlights the unique character of the baritone saxophone. Lyric and melodic, rhythmically supportive yet boldly commanding the spotlight, the instrument possesses an extraordinary range of expressive possibilities. It is no surprise that Adolphe Sax chose the baritone saxophone as the first instrument to be developed within the saxophone family.
With passion, expertise, meticulous craftsmanship, and an unmistakable sense of enjoyment, these musicians continually challenge both themselves and their audiences through newly commissioned compositions, innovative arrangements, and ambitious projects that draw upon centuries of musical history. Over the years, they have collaborated with artists such as Nora Fischer, Jeroen Zijlstra, Cor Bakker, and DIG d’DIZ.
In 2017, the ensemble embarked on an extensive concert tour throughout the Netherlands together with another distinguished baritone, opera singer Ernst Daniël Smid. The programme featured a unique, colourful, and diverse repertoire, including works by J.S. Bach, Henry Purcell, and Pavel Chesnokov, alongside songs by Dutch songwriters Harry Bannink, Ramses Shaffy, and Jules de Corte.
The ensemble continuously commissions, develops, and expands its repertoire, much of it composed or arranged by the musicians themselves. During their performances, audiences are guided through the history, background, and creation of this distinctive body of work.
