Mulligan, 100 A Celebration of Gerry Mulligan (1927–2027)

In april 2027 viert de internationale jazzwereld de honderdste geboortedag van Gerry Mulligan: een van de meest invloedrijke baritonsaxofonisten, componisten en arrangeurs uit de jazzgeschiedenis. Mulligan speelde een sleutelrol in de ontwikkeling van de cool jazz en drukte zijn stempel op generaties musici met zijn lyrische spel, transparante arrangementen en vernieuwende compositorische aanpak.
Ter gelegenheid van deze bijzondere verjaardag presenteren drie vooraanstaande baritonsaxofonisten een concertproject dat verder gaat dan een traditionele tribute. Mulligan 100 brengt niet alleen Mulligans bekendste composities en arrangementen, maar verkent ook de muzikale geest van zijn oeuvre: melodische inventiviteit, contrapunt, swing, ruimte en verfijning.
Centraal in het project staan twee van Nederlands meest prominente jazzbaritonsaxofonisten: Jan Menu en Rik van den Bergh. “Guest of honour” is de Amerikaanse grootmeester Gary Smulyan, wereldwijd erkend als een van de belangrijkste hedendaagse vertegenwoordigers van de baritonsaxofoon.
Gary Smulyan
Smulyan won meerdere malen de prestigieuze DownBeat Critics Poll en Readers Poll en werkte met grootheden als Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Holland, Carla Bley, Freddie Hubbard, Tommy Flanagan en het Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Hij geldt internationaal als een van de belangrijkste erfgenamen van de grote baritontraditie van onder meer Gerry Mulligan en Pepper Adams.
Het programma combineert composities van Mulligan met nieuw repertoire en arrangementen speciaal geschreven voor drie baritonsaxofoons — een zeldzame en indrukwekkende bezetting die zowel het warme lyrische karakter als de krachtige orkestrale mogelijkheden van het instrument volledig benut.
Jan Menu
Jan Menu behoort tot de meest onderscheidende Nederlandse jazzsaxofonisten van zijn generatie. Hij won in 1989 het prestigieuze Loosdrecht Jazzconcours en ontving de Wessel Ilcken Prijs, waarbij hij werd geprezen om zijn melodische spel, persoonlijke frasering en harmonische verfijning — kwaliteiten die nog altijd centraal staan in zijn muzikale identiteit.
Hoewel Menu jarenlang vooral actief was als tenorsaxofonist, heeft hij zich de laatste decennia nadrukkelijk toegelegd op de baritonsaxofoon. Zijn spel onderscheidt zich door een uitzonderlijke lichtheid en lyriek op een instrument dat vaak als log en zwaar wordt beschouwd.
Menu werkte met uiteenlopende musici en ensembles, waaronder het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Greetje Kauffeld, Laura Fygi, Fay Claassen, Jesse van Ruller, Willem Breuker en Gary Smulyan. In 1994 verving hij Ronnie Cuber tijdens een Europese tournee van de Mingus Big Band.
Met het kamerjazztrio DIG d’DIZ ontwikkelde hij een unieke muzikale taal waarin jazz, kamermuziek, improvisatie en hedendaagse compositie samenkomen. Daarnaast bracht hij met “Mulligan Moods” al eerder een persoonlijk eerbetoon aan Gerry Mulligan.
Rik van den Bergh
Rik van den Bergh behoort tot de meest vooraanstaande Nederlandse baritonsaxofonisten van
zijn generatie. Al meer dan 25 jaar richt hij zich volledig op de baritonsaxofoon.
Zijn spel is geworteld in de traditie van Harry Carney, Charlie Parker en Pepper Adams. Hij bouwt verder op deze traditie maar klinkt tegelijk persoonlijk, krachtig en modern.
Ven den Bergh speelde in grotere bezettingen als het Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra en het Peter Beets New Jazz Orchestra. Hiernaast had hij zijn eigen projecten in kleinere bezettingen, waaronder het kwintet met trombonist Bart van Lier.
Met projecten als “ReSerge” (een hommage aan Serge Chaloff) en “IS THAT SO?” (een eerbetoon aan Duke Pearson) bewees hij bovendien zijn sterke affiniteit met jazzgeschiedenis en thematische projecten rond iconische componisten en instrumentalisten.
Dat van den Bergh een specialist is op zijn instrument bleef internationaal niet onopgemerkt. Hij toerde en nam op met musici als Gary Smulyan, Ronnie Cuber, Teddy Edwards, Dick Oatts, Joe Magnarelli en Jim Rotondi.
In het voorjaar van 2026 verschijnt zijn kwintetplaat met trompettist Joe Magnarelli.
Sinds 2013 is hij als docent verbonden aan Codarts Rotterdam.

In April 2027, the international jazz community will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Gerry Mulligan, one of the most influential baritone saxophonists, composers, and arrangers in jazz history. Mulligan played a pivotal role in the development of cool jazz and left an enduring mark on generations of musicians through his lyrical playing, transparent arrangements, and innovative compositional approach.
To mark this special anniversary, three leading baritone saxophonists present a concert project that goes beyond a traditional tribute. Mulligan 100 not only revisits Mulligan’s most celebrated compositions and arrangements but also explores the musical spirit of his work: melodic inventiveness, counterpoint, swing, space, and refinement.
At the heart of the project are two of the Netherlands’ most prominent jazz baritone saxophonists: Jan Menu and Rik van den Bergh. Joining them as Guest of Honour is the American master Gary Smulyan, internationally recognised as one of the foremost contemporary exponents of the baritone saxophone.
Gary Smulyan
Gary Smulyan has won the prestigious DownBeat Critics Poll and Readers Poll multiple times and has performed and recorded with jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Holland, Carla Bley, Freddie Hubbard, Tommy Flanagan and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Internationally, he is regarded as one of the leading heirs to the great baritone saxophone tradition established by artists such as Gerry Mulligan and Pepper Adams.
The programme combines Mulligan’s compositions with newly written repertoire and arrangements specifically created for three baritone saxophones—a rare and impressive instrumentation that fully exploits both the warm lyrical character and the powerful orchestral possibilities of the instrument.
Jan Menu
Jan Menu is among the most distinctive Dutch jazz saxophonists of his generation. In 1989 he won the prestigious Loosdrecht Jazz Competition and received the Wessel Ilcken Prize, earning praise for his melodic improvisation, personal phrasing, and harmonic sophistication—qualities that remain central to his musical identity.
Although Menu was active primarily as a tenor saxophonist for many years, in recent decades he has devoted himself increasingly to the baritone saxophone. His playing is distinguished by an exceptional lightness and lyricism on an instrument often regarded as heavy and cumbersome.
Menu has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and ensembles, including the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Greetje Kauffeld, Laura Fygi, Fay Claassen, Jesse van Ruller, Willem Breuker and Gary Smulyan. In 1994, he replaced Ronnie Cuber on a European tour with the Mingus Big Band.
With the chamber-jazz trio DIG d’DIZ, he developed a unique musical language in which jazz, chamber music, improvisation, and contemporary composition converge. Earlier, he also paid a personal tribute to Gerry Mulligan with the project Mulligan Moods.
Rik van den Bergh
Rik van den Bergh is one of the leading Dutch baritone saxophonists of his generation. For more than twenty-five years, he has devoted himself exclusively to the baritone saxophone.
His playing is rooted in the tradition of Harry Carney, Charlie Parker and Pepper Adams. Building upon that tradition, he has developed a sound that is at once personal, powerful, and contemporary.
Van den Bergh has performed with large ensembles such as the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra and the Peter Beets New Jazz Orchestra. Alongside these activities, he has led a variety of smaller-group projects, including a quintet featuring trombonist Bart van Lier.
With projects such as ReSerge (a tribute to Serge Chaloff) and IS THAT SO? (a tribute to Duke Pearson), he has demonstrated a strong affinity for jazz history and thematic projects centred around iconic composers and instrumentalists.
His reputation as a baritone saxophone specialist has gained international recognition. He has toured and recorded with musicians including Gary Smulyan, Ronnie Cuber, Teddy Edwards, Dick Oatts, Joe Magnarelli and Jim Rotondi.
In spring 2026, his new quintet album featuring Joe Magnarelli will be released.
Since 2013, Van den Bergh has been a faculty member at Codarts University for the Arts.
